Toronto filmmaker, <strong>Mike Palmer<\/strong> has found a way and a lot of it has to do with keeping it personal.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Through his travel series, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.roamingfocus.ca\/\">Roaming Focus<\/a>, Palmer merges together beautiful drone camera work, journal-esque testimonies and striking soundtracks. His adventure films go off the beaten path (pun intended) and create an interesting sense of vulnerability, exploration&nbsp;and expansiveness in every piece he creates. Part of what makes his films have such a unique vibe is how he juxtaposes electronic music with the organic natural settings.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">We chat with Mike as he dives deeper into his personal voice and how he uses music as a driving force in his films.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>M: Why film? What compelled you to be a filmmaker?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>MP: <\/strong>It\u2019s something I\u2019ve always done. &nbsp;Since I was a kid I was&nbsp;spending my summers making movies. I&#8217;ve always seemed to want to tell stories&nbsp;cinematically.<\/p>\n<p><strong>M: Your films often feel like journal entries, when did you make the decision to involve your voice into the mix?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>MP: <\/strong>I think you\u2019re referring to the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.roamingfocus.ca\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roaming Focus<\/a>&nbsp;episodes. &nbsp;I originally used my voice as a tool to fill gaps in the storyline and help&nbsp;transition between scenes. &nbsp;I really don\u2019t like the way reality shows have these&nbsp;\u2018recap\u2019 interviews, I was&nbsp;determined not to do that!<\/p>\n<div\n        class=\"\n          image-block-outer-wrapper\n          layout-caption-hidden\n          design-layout-inline\n        \"\n        data-test=\"image-block-inline-outer-wrapper\"\n    ><\/p>\n<figure\n            class=\"\n              sqs-block-image-figure\n              intrinsic\n            \"\n            style=\"max-width:1024.0px;\"\n        ><\/p>\n<div\n                style=\"padding-bottom:66.69921875%;\"\n              class=\"\n                image-block-wrapper\n                has-aspect-ratio\n              \"\n              data-animation-role=\"image\"\n  data-animation-override\n          ><br \/>\n            <noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/marmosetmusic.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/458_image-asset.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumb-image\" src=\"https:\/\/marmosetmusic.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/458_image-asset.jpg\" data-image=\"https:\/\/marmosetmusic.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/458_image-asset.jpg\" data-image-dimensions=\"1024x683\" data-image-focal-point=\"0.5,0.5\" alt=\"\" data-load=\"false\" data-image-id=\"55ad1e24e4b0661e7e7629bf\" data-type=\"image\" \/>\n          <\/div>\n<\/figure><\/div>\n<p><strong>M: What&#8217;s the toughest decision you&#8217;ve had to make as a filmmaker?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>MP:&nbsp;<\/strong>I don\u2019t&nbsp;have one particular moment, but overall I find that hardest&nbsp;decisions are in post production. &nbsp;Deciding what footage to keep and what to cut can be heart breaking. &nbsp;Viewers tend to have a short attention span these days and unfortunately that means&nbsp;having to cut out awesome footage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>M: How do you feel music has a role in film?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>MP: <\/strong>Music is the best emotional connector and when used correctly&nbsp;the impact is substantial. &nbsp;I think music is key to enhancing&nbsp;a scene.<\/p>\n<p>   <iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fZdWBapOLg8?wmode=opaque&amp;enablejsapi=1\" height=\"480\" width=\"854\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><br \/>\n<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>M: How do you feel music is misused in film?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>MP:<\/strong> I think music is misused when it\u2019s not thought out and just thrown in. &nbsp;I don\u2019t think music should fill a void, it should enhance a moment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>M: How do you feel your films are different than other films?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>MP: <\/strong>I\u2019m not sure I do feel my films are different. &nbsp;I think everyone hopes they\u2019re doing something unique but for the most part everything\u2019s been done before. &nbsp;I can be a little ignorant as a filmmaker, I try not to focus on what others are doing, I\u2019d rather just do my own thing. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>M: What&#8217;s the most recent album you&#8217;ve listened to?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>MP: <\/strong>It\u2019s a little random, B.B.
