Strong visuals and story can sometimes fall flat if told in an unfitting manner. Pacing makes the difference between amazing and awkward.<\/p>\n<p>The work of <strong>Gnarly Bay Productions<\/strong> is compelling and a lot of this has to do with<em>&nbsp;how<\/em> they&nbsp;tell a story.&nbsp;When behind the camera, their work is beautiful and their portraits of people are stunning. Their choice of soundtracks let&#8217;s the story move and breathe as it needs to, presenting films that really stick with you.<\/p>\n<p>We chatted with co-founder <strong>Dan Riordan<\/strong> about his relationship with filmmaking, how it&#8217;s evolved and how he chooses music to elevate his stories.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p id=\"yui_3_17_2_3_1425313600740_11700\"><strong id=\"yui_3_17_2_3_1425313600740_13048\">M: When did you know you wanted to be a filmmaker?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_17_2_3_1425313600740_9483\"><strong>DR: <\/strong>I always tell the story of going to medical school because my initials are DR\u2026then, I attribute the \u201cMaybe I should be a filmmaker\u201d eureka-moment to the 1,2 punch of American Beauty and Fight Club. &nbsp;These movies came out my freshman year in college\u2026and my mind was still very moldable (and not yet collecting mold) and these expressions of the absolute chaos that floats beneath the American psyche reeled me in (#firstworldproblems)&#8230;and dared me to take the leap into telling stories for a living. &nbsp;Dana and I were already making silly skits with our friends and starting to transition into getting paid to do random video projects\u2026so, it was refreshing to switch gears from pursuing a medical profession to stepping into the wide-eyed wonder of being able to capture stories for a living. &nbsp;We\u2019ve never considered narrative filmmaking at Gnarly Bay. &nbsp;The process seems slightly daunting, and our big excuse is that there are crazy enough stories to capture in real life. &nbsp;So, even though major motion pictures saved me from the banalities of organic chem and 3rd shift residencies\u2026we\u2019ve always gravitated towards telling smaller stories\u2026.and luckily, the internet arrived just in time to give us a platform to make a career out of it.<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_17_2_3_1425313600740_10131\"><strong>M: What&#8217;s your favorite moment of the filmmaking process?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_17_2_3_1425313600740_9489\"><strong>DR: <\/strong>My favorite moment is when an edit gives you chills. &nbsp;The skeleton that you\u2019ve created from footage, music, and sound design has been inhabited by a friendly ghost\u2026and there is a Dr Frankenstein moment. &nbsp;It\u2019s alive.<\/p>\n<div\n        class=\"\n          image-block-outer-wrapper\n          layout-caption-hidden\n          design-layout-inline\n        \"\n        data-test=\"image-block-inline-outer-wrapper\"\n    ><\/p>\n<figure\n            class=\"\n              sqs-block-image-figure\n              intrinsic\n            \"\n            style=\"max-width:2500.0px;\"\n        ><\/p>\n<div\n                style=\"padding-bottom:51.27906799316406%;\"\n              class=\"\n                image-block-wrapper\n                has-aspect-ratio\n              \"\n              data-animation-role=\"image\"\n  data-animation-override\n          ><br \/>\n            <noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/marmosetmusic.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/553_image-asset.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumb-image lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/marmosetmusic.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/553_image-asset.jpg\" data-image=\"https:\/\/marmosetmusic.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/553_image-asset.jpg\" data-image-dimensions=\"2500x1667\" data-image-focal-point=\"0.5,0.5\" alt=\"\" data-load=\"false\" data-image-id=\"54f490e3e4b04ba25943fbea\" data-type=\"image\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/>\n          <\/div>\n<\/figure><\/div>\n<p><strong>M: What do you think defines a filmmakers&#8217; &#8220;voice\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>DR: <\/strong>A filmmakers&#8217; voice is defined by their&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/85040589\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tastes and sensibilities<\/a>&nbsp; &nbsp;Some filmmakers are more comfortable letting a moment breathe without controlling it too much with music or elaborate b-roll. &nbsp;I watched Citizenfour last night\u2026and was totally engaged by the story &#8211;and at the same time&#8211; &nbsp;Cool thought, Vince and Lenny\u2026but we say\u2026&#8221;Find the hocus pocus and get it in focus.\u201d &nbsp;Basically, in order to find the magic\u2026you need to be present in the moment and not thinking about gigabytes and gadgetry. &nbsp; is the biggest misuse of music. &nbsp;Sometimes you will see a huge gap between the mood of the song, and the pacing of the edit. &nbsp;Fast, upbeat music overwhelming the slow, methodical story that is being told. &nbsp;Maybe it\u2019s the attempt to add a false sense of excitement to an edit\u2026but if it doesn\u2019t match the subject matter\u2026it doesn\u2019t serve the story.<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_17_2_3_1425313600740_10383\"><strong>M: What&#8217;s coming up?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>DR: <\/strong>Besides our client work, we have a really cool collaborative project with our friend Forest Woodward that is waiting to be released. &nbsp;Forest is an amazing photographer\u2026and back in the day, his dad, Doug Woodward, was a pioneer of kayaking and rafting.
