In late-’70s Phoenix, Blue Shoes built a strong local following playing long nights of covers while introducing their own original songs. Formed by husband-and-wife duo D.R. Wilke and Peggy “Murph” Murphy alongside Rick Janzen and Jim Allen, the band combined Beatles-inspired melodies, guitars, and new-wave influence. Their 1980 single “Better” became a regional radio favorite, earning spins on KROQ. In less than three years, Blue Shoes released several independent records, opened for major touring acts, and helped shape Arizona power-pop. Today, the band’s catalog is preserved through Fervor Records.
