Though the roots of Salsa music are inextricable from the Puerto Rican and Cuban musicians in New York during the 1950s, multi-instrumentalist Ramon Marquez actually hailed from Guadalajara, Mexico and is still considered one of the forefathers of Salsa. He learned music theory from his father before working his way through the National Conservatory, eventually going on to work with military and university bands throughout Mexico. He eventually became the Secretary of Cultural Relations for the Musician’s Union of the Federal district of Mexico. Though he released music on labels across the Americas and Europe, it was his work on New York’s Fiesta Records that proved the most fruitful.
