Like so much music in pop history, Burnside and Gonzales grew out of a collaboration for a different project altogether. During a session in Tulsa, the two were talking music and exchanging influences when they hit on a common admiration for the bluesy garage psychedelia of The Shadows of Knight and the surfy post-punk of The Black Lips; sounds that neither had the opportunity to explore artistically. What followed was a whirlwind creative week. After enjoying a dinner at his favorite Mexican restaurant in North Tulsa he dubbed the side project Burnside and Gonzales after a lonely highway exit in Ascension Parish, Louisiana that he had come across in his travels.
