Undertow was formed in 1985, in Phoenix Arizona, by guitarists Harry McCaleb (Algebra Ranch) and Robin Johnson (Gentlemen Afterdark). The two then recruited Mark Lauer (Crushed) on vocals and bass, and Alan Willey (The Strand) on drums. Undertow was together from 1985 to 1992. During that time, their sound evolved from pop to goth to something akin to metal. By the time of their 1987 recording, Ghost, they were writing darker, more aggressive music, and starting to get a lot of attention from the goth community. They were listening to bands like Mission UK, Sisters of Mercy, and bands on the 4AD label. You can hear that, but definitely filtered through the Undertow sound.
