Sonny Hugg
Flint, Michigan’s Sonny Hugg channeled Cream, Hendrix and Blue Cheer into a muscular, working-class sound. Guitarist-singer Craig Marsden, keyboardist Barry Best, bassist Rob Grange and drummer Rob Russ drew huge local crowds, sharing stages with Alice Cooper, MC5, the Stooges and Grand Funk Railroad. Their lone 1970 single, “Out in the Country,” pairs thunderous rhythms and raging organ with Marsden’s soaring plea for freedom beyond the factories. The band split soon after, but its members’ musical legacies live on via Fervor Records' extensive vintage catalogue.
