James McRoberts probably had little idea when he drew men together to sing the gospel in 1934 of the longevity and impact of the movement. The founder's aim to keep the music "studiously simple and direct" is a nice way of saying that for those who appreciate the fine craftsmanship and expertise of quality choral singing there is little here to admire and nothing to learn from. The power in evidence comes from sheer weight of numbers rather than skilled use of relevant vocal techniques.
