The Spiffs
RockPhoenix punk-pop trio the Spiffs burned bright from 1979–81, led by fearless bassist/frontman Glenn De Jongh. In a city where punks were vastly outnumbered by hard-rock fans, the band became notorious for chaotic performances, including a lakeside festival where ice, drinks, tomatoes, and sandwiches rained onto the stage as a punk-versus-metalhead brawl erupted in the crowd. Mixing Ramones, Pistols, and Monkees covers with De Jongh’s hook-filled originals, the Spiffs built a devoted following, earned a club residency, and released the classic Don’t Waste Your Money on This Garbage EP before flaming out in spectacular fashion.
