Employee Spotlight: Saloni Shah, Tech Team Lead + Software Development Manager

How did you first hear about Marmoset? How would you describe the interview process?

I heard about Marmoset and the open role in a job posting on PDXWIT. I was introduced to Nicole Hooper and had a fully remote interview process and was one of the first remotely interviewed and hired candidates during the pandemic. It was a multi stage interview process with several panel interviews and I really enjoyed the experience.

How long have you worked at Marmoset? Can you tell us more about your role and background?

I am the Tech Team Lead + Software Development Manager and have worked at Marmoset for over a year. I lead a team of rock star full stack developers and a product owner who work tirelessly to keep the Marmoset site up and running and fresh. I also liaise with our offshore developers on new projects and cross-collaborate with all the other teams at Marmoset to ensure a one of a kind user experience.

What are some community partnerships that you were excited to hear Marmoset collaborates with?

I’ve been quite impressed by Marmoset’s community partnerships and commitment to giving back and being a B-Corp. Some of the partnerships that I was excited to hear about include Rock n Roll Camp For Girls, Friends of the Columbia Gorge and Kairos.

How would you describe the work environment, especially as we navigate remote working?

The work environment on the Tech Team is open and collaborative. We follow agile software development and rely heavily on cross-team collaboration and communication. Working remotely has had its perks and drawbacks. At Marmoset everyone strives to make their work day resemble as much of a working-in-person experience as possible! All of our meetings are video calls that help us build that personal connection. Everyone is encouraged to grab virtual coffees to get to know teammates better, take breaks and do whatever it takes to maintain that work-life balance while working remotely.

Do you have any pet “coworkers”?

No but I’d love to have one some day.

How are your accomplishments recognized at work?

Our leaders check-in with their team members on a weekly basis. This is one of the many places where accomplishments are amplified. We have a company-wide practice where employees give shout outs, weekly meetings where we share accomplishments as a headline and a daily morning huddle where we take the time to express gratitude towards specific challenges that our co-workers helped us overcome.

What is something that you couldn‘t live without? (food, travel, family, hobbies, anything!)

My 2 girls.

How would you describe the level of support offered to you in your day-to-day responsibilities?

I feel very well supported and at the same time have autonomy to lead my team to the best of my ability. I know the Executive team has my back and me theirs when needed. Our CEO and Founder Ryan Wines has done a fine job of hiring the best on the planet and he leads them with the same care and intention that each one brings to their job.

What is your most memorable travel destination? Where do you want to visit next?

Kauai was my most memorable trip and I’d like to visit my hometown Ahmedabad next!

Do you have a creative outlet or a side hustle that you’re passionate about?

I love anything hands on – I like to work on small sewing projects, art and crafts with my girls. I have a part time side, seasonal hustle where I sell Indian garments and jewelry.

How does Marmoset view such areas as work-life balance?

We greatly value work-life balance especially when working from home! Breaks from work, mental health wellness, PTO are highly encouraged. We have unlimited PTO and great benefits that support the long term physical and mental health of all employees.

Do you feel a sense of connection to Marmoset’s core values?

Absolutely! That is one of the key reasons why I was drawn to the company and inspired to apply for the role. Also the reason that helps me get out of bed and show up at work every morning!

What’s one thing you wish you knew before you started working here?

The one thing I wasn’t expecting was to get connected to the team and Marmoset so well, so soon given that I started remote. I wish I knew what a fun place this is to work for and I would have looked into starting here sooner.
