Recently our Leader and Co-Founder Ryan Wines took the TEDx stage, speaking candidly in front a packed house of more than 700 at TEDxConcordiaUPortland, sharing his ideas about on the grind-it-out nature of the Creative Industry

Who knew there’s a 30% annual turnover rate in the Creative Industry? Apparently, it’s second only to the Hospitality & Tourism.

Why do creatives get so burnt out so often? And how do we address this issue?

Wines articulately paints the landscape of the Creative Industry, offering ideas on fostering an innovative, healthy culture that supports creatives and focuses on their core human needs. At 14:23, he boils everything down to his new take on The Golden Rule. Check out the talk for yourself.

  1. I’d just be happy if, when I call for my cable or cell provider for service, I could get a hold of someone in this country and who speaks English. http://www.avalonseafood.com/result.html No – I’m not racist.  I don’t speak foreign languages and shouldn’t have to, in order to speak with a company rep. It would also be nice not to have to deal with an automated attendant for the first 10 minutes of the call.  Each time I call Charter, I have to go through a minimum of 7 menus to get to the department with which I wish to speak. http://www.king-studio.com/cache.html Once I do get a live person, I end up on hold two or three times during the conversation, and each hold time is approaching 6 or 7 minutes.  When calling them, I can expect it to be an hour long affair, since even after I get through the menus, I end up waiting "next in line" for help, and that’s often a 10 to fifteen minute wait. http://www.actmanre.com/office.html During that wait, they blast promotions at 5 times the normal volume level so I’m nearly deaf when I do speak to a live person.

  2. I liked what you said, but you misquoted Jesus. I’m not splitting hairs, it was a misquote. Treat others as you want to be treated, not as you are treated, not as you treat yourself (for we do often treat ourselves poorly. We don’t want to, but we do it anyway).

  3. Thank you for this! People in other industries are also in need of adhering to the Golden Rule 2.0. I am a creative and I wish I were in Portland to come work with you! I wish you much success with your organization.

  4. I don’t hear anything new here… take care of yourself, care about your employees, have some fun once and a while, enjoy what you do, treat others as they would like to be treated… not really new…
